Another all-star tribute album from Cleopatra Records. The biggest
surprise is perhaps that Billy Sherwood is not involved! Instead,
Jürgen Engler produced: he's done similar release before, like Who are
You: An All Star Tribute to The Who.
It's Wish You were Here, a classic album. So it's a great
listen. Is it actually needed? Probably not... you could just listen
to the original. As covers, there are no radical re-interpretations
here, but some of the performances do shine through: e.g.,
Hackett on (1), Wakeman on (2), Hillage on (5). So, these are very
good performances of Wish You were Here, perhaps a step
above some of the Billy Sherwood-led Floyd tributes on Cleopatra
we've had before. (Sherwood did two complete Floyd albums for the
label: Back Against the Wall (2005) and Return to the
Dark Side of the Moon (2006). Before that, he did a broader
Floyd tribute album with Bob Kulick, Pigs
& Pyramids—An All Star Lineup Performing the Songs of Pink
Floyd (2002), which included versions of "Welcome to the
Machine" with Derek Sherinian (but no Sherwood performing), "Shine
on You Crazy Diamond" with Steve Lukather and Sherwood, and "Have a
Cigar" with Bobby Kimball and Mike Porcaro (no Sherwood
performing)... should you want to compare.)
Edgar Froese died in 2015, so some of this album must have been
recorded before. (HP, 17 Jul 21)
